What is Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy is the assessment and treatment of communication problems and speech disorders. It is performed by speech-language pathologists (SLPs), which are often referred to as speech therapists.
Speech therapy techniques are used to improve communication which includes, articulation therapy, language intervention activities, and others depending on the type of speech or language disorder. The goals vary depending on the type and severity of the communication disorder, but they aim to improve the person’s ability to express and understand language. The process starts by identifying what kind of speech or language problem a child has then they determine the cause and decide on the best treatment.
In addition to speech challenges, therapy can target problems with:
- Receptive language (understanding language)
- Expressive language (using language)
- Social communication (using language in socially appropriate ways)
- Reading and spelling (including dyslexia)
